Huang Na
Blog song change! - Jolin - Tian Kong =)
Interesting article taken from Sunday, TNP. those who have been reading article of Huang Na murder case.. read on =D
They came, they queued, they gawked. As withnesses, prosecutors and the defence spoke on the stand at Took Leng How's trial, as many as 100 S'poreans watched intently from the gallery. What was going through their minds? A court regular and odd-job worker, who wants to be known only as Mr Toh, 56, shares his 'blog' with DAWN CHIA.
DRAMA THAT GRIPPED COURT KAYPOH
Monday, July 11 (Day 1 of Took's trial for the murder of 8 yrs old, Huang Na)
IT'S the day I've been waiting for - a chance to see Ah Hao (Took) face-to-face! For months, I monitored newspapers and watched TV daily to find out when the murder trial would start.
Huang Na's murder shook our country, and the Ah Cheks and Ah Sohs at kopitiams have been talking about it. She was such a young girl, and to be killed so brutally, it make me gek sim (Hokkien for heartbroken).
I started queueing at 7.30am though the trial was to start only at 10am. Thought I'd be number one, but already got more than 10 people infront of me!
One man said he started queueing soon after 6am. Siao ah (crazy), so early.
I made sure I had a heavy breakfast - Hainan porridge at Jalan Besar. I knew I had to skip lunch to queue for the afternoon session - must be a bit kiasu mah.
If only I knew the afternoon session would be so boring, I wouldn't have stayed.
The prosector kept on reading the withnesses' statements - wished he would hurry up and get it over and done with.
It's not easy to stay awke in the afternoon, you know. We're all waiting for some action, and those who had a heavy lunch were beginning to doze off. I felt my own eyes almost closing at some points.
It finally ended at 5pm. Maybe tomorrow will be more exciting.
Thursday, July 14 (Day 4)
Got a good look at Ah Hao over the last few days.
He keeps smiling. Don't know if he's siao or not. Then he keeps rubbing his nose and doing neck exercises. Maybe he's just bored.
It's such a coincidence that the trial is held in Court 4D. 4D, get it? Reminds me of the time people went to Huang Na's wake to get 4D numbers to bet on.
Some people even blatantly copied down the number of the scooter which Ah Hao used to transport Huang Na's body. Tsk.
I'm not one to profit from someone's death - it's not right. We have to know to how to distinguish right from wrong and not always look for the shortcut to make a quick buck.
Ah Hao's old auntie keep tearing and blowing her nose into her handkerchieft. I feel sorry for her.
Monday, July 18 (Day 6)
Two big things happened today. First, Huang Shu Ying (Huang Na's mother) came.
I started queueing at 6.50am. Cannto miss her mah, she's the crucial withness, you know. Had a feeling that people will start coming from today since Huang Shu Ying kena take the witness stand this week.
Kaypoh people will surely come to see what the fuss is all about.
But wasted lah, she didn't take the stand after all. Good also lah, because we can see her for another day.
She seems to have lost weight. Who wouldn't? Her daughter is dead.
I also felt very gek sim when I saw Ah Hao's wife and son.
The court gave them some time to talk during lunch.
I teared when I saw the little boy. He's only 2 and looks so lovable. Ah Hao's sister also kept crying. Her eyes and nose were all red.
Must remember to wake up early tomorrow to get a seat.
Tuesday, July 19 (Day 7)
Huang Shu Ying cried.
She used up her entire pack of tissue paper as she watched the reenactment video on how Ah Hao allegedly killed her daughter. Kor lian (Hokkien for poor thing).
I feel her pain. She didn't look at anyone when she was answering questions from the lawyers. We were all trying to see her face, but she kept her head bowed. Don;t know why she did that. We were all disappointed.
I don;t really understand her statement - sometimes she said Ah Hao was close to Huang Na, sometimes she said he wasn'. But after she took the stand, nothing much already lah.
Like the blockbuster movie has ended. The next thing to look out for is whether Ah Hao will take the stand.
Must make sure I can get a piece of this "live" action everyday. It's different from reading the papers and watching tv.
Wonder if Huang Shu Ying will come tomorrow.
Thursday, July 21 (Day 9)
Wasted! Ah Hao said he doesn't want to take the stand!
Thought that he would defend himself, and that would be a damm exciting time - like another movie starting.
All he said was "wo bu yao shang qu" (mandarin for I choose not to take the stand). Guess he has his reasons for not doing so.
Subhas (Took's lawyer, Mr Subhas Anandan) must know what he's doing.
No court tomorrow. Disappointed lah.
Monday, July 25 (Day 10)
Got quite irritated with a short man today.
He said very loudly in English that those who can't understand or speak English should not be allowed into the courtroom. Who ish he to say that?
I admit, my english is not very power (sic), but I can understand the gist of what's happening. When it get too techincal, I get bored and listen to their voices.
Like today, I knew that the psychiatrist for the defence was arguing with the prosecutor about whether Ah Hao is siao. Both became very fed-up and they started talking very loudly. It was very funny and entertaining, and some ppl clapped and laugh out loud.
Yah, it's wrong, but everyone ish just glad for some form of relieft when the topic ish boring.
Whether we know English or not, it's up to us to decide if we want to stay or leave. The short man ish just a big kaypoh.
Tuesday, July 26 (Day 11)
Some ppl don't use their brains.
Come to court must dress properly what. At least wear pants lah.
This man who came in bermudas and slippers almost kena thrown out by all the policeman. He was very rude. Dared to talk so loudly while the judge was there and lawyers were still talking.
But he's not the only one.
Some ppl put their things in plastic bags, and when they're looking for something, they make a lot of noise with it, and it's very rude. They should know better, and get themselves tgt before they come into the courtroom.
Or ask regulars like me - I've been coming to court to listen since I was in my 20s.
I wear slippers, but at least I wear long pants, so they cover a bit lah. Not so obvious.
Common sense mah.
Wednesday, July 27 (Day 12)
Get some more drama today. The psychiatrist said Ah Hao is crazy.
I don't know lah. He hasb been bitting his fingernais alot, esp over the last week.
Got a feeling it might end tml since there's nth-ing much to do anymore.
When court ended, i spoke to some other regulars - the hi-bye type of "friends" - whom I've gotten to know over the last few weeks.
Sometimes we will ta bao (hokkien for takeaway) food from Funan Centre's foodcourt and eat outside the courtroom and wait for the afternoon session to start. Kiasu mah, cannot lose our place in the queue.
Today, the regulars talked about 4D numbers and discussed the murder like they're the judge. These ppl are really ji po (mandarin for kaypoh).
They go home to update their friends and family everyday, about what Ah Hao's wife wears and how many times they looked at each other. As if that's impt.
I don't do that. I just come to listen for my own good, and satisfy my curiosty.
Thursday, July 28 (Final Day)
End of the trial.
Tml I will have nth-ing to do in the day to occupy my time.
Kaypoh verdict.
Most exciting: When Huang Shu Ying turned up. She's lye the lead actress - being the mother of the murdered girl - yet she's still so fashionable and had such a colourful past. Of course I couldn't wait to see what she would do or say or look like.
Most boring: When the forensic pathologist started talking. Aiyoh, it was so technical, and I didn't understand half of it.
I wanted to talk out many times, but decided to stay just in case something happended. You never know what will happen at trials.
Most confusing: The police officers' statement.
There were so many of them, and all sounded the same to me. It was very sian listening to them.
My favourite ish still the Anthony Ler one. (Ler was hanged in 2002 for the murder of his wife)
That one was really handsome - mcuh more handsome than Ah Hao.
Ah Hao ish boyish looking, fair, and will appeal to young girls looking for fun. He's the type to bring them dancing in disco.
Anthony, on the other hand, projected a more stable image - the husband type.
But look wad he did - you can't judge a boo by its cover.
Guess I have to find something to occupy myself until Ah Hao verdict is out. You can bet i'll be there.
